TUBEmusic
Experience the London Underground's electromagnetic voice. TUBEmusic transforms electromagnetic emissions captured from tube trains into an interactive spatial composition. Move your cursor to explore the hidden sonic architecture of London's transit network, each line tells its own electromagnetic story.
TUBEmusic
An Electromagnetic Exploration of the London Underground
TUBEmusic is a multi-part electromagnetic sound work documenting London's Underground network, recorded in 2015. Using electromagnetic field pickups during actual tube journeys, the series captures the electrical signatures of six different lines plus the multi-line convergence at Bank/Monument interchange.
Each composition transforms electromagnetic recordings into layered soundscapes through temporal shifting and speed manipulation. The electrical emissions of aging infrastructure, contemporary systems, and trains under operational pressure become source material for exploring how depth, technology, and usage patterns shape the Underground's hidden sonic character.
From the Central Line's underground/overground transitions to the Northern Line's rush hour intensity, each piece reveals the distinctive electromagnetic voice of its route. The series creates a sonic document of London's subterranean transportation network, organized by infrastructure depth and technological evolution.
Methodology: Electromagnetic field recordings captured during tube journeys in 2015. Recordings subjected to layering, temporal shifting, and speed manipulation to reveal harmonic structures inherent in the Underground's electrical systems.
